Destiny 2: What to Actually Do in Your First Week

Destiny 2: What to Actually Do in Your First Week Article

Destiny 2 explains nothing and shows you everything. Here is a plain order of operations for your first week, so you spend it playing instead of reading menus.

Destiny 2 is one of the worst games in the world at explaining itself. You finish the opening mission, get dropped into a hub with six vendors, four currencies and a dozen flashing icons, and nothing tells you which one matters. This is an order of operations for your first week, written so you can stop reading guides and start playing.

Day one: finish the intro, then stop chasing everything

Complete the opening story missions and the first subclass unlock. Do not try to understand every vendor yet. Your only goal on day one is to end up with a character that can shoot, move, and use an ability you chose on purpose.

Pick one class and commit. All three are viable. Switching classes in week one is the fastest way to end the week with three half-finished characters and no progress.

Day two and three: unlock the systems that gate everything else
  • Your subclass aspects and fragments. These are the real power of your build, and many are locked behind short quests. Do them early, while the activities are still level-appropriate.
  • The seasonal intro quest. Whatever the current season is called, its opening questline unlocks the seasonal activity and the artifact. Both matter for the rest of the season.
  • Your vault. Learn where it is and how to use it before your inventory fills. It will fill faster than you expect.
Day four to seven: pick two activities and repeat them

Destiny rewards repetition, not variety. Choose two activities that give gear at your level and run them until the rewards stop feeling like upgrades:

  • Playlist activities (strikes, gambit, crucible) for steady, low-stress gear and seasonal progress.
  • Seasonal activity for the current season's loot and currency.

Do not spread yourself across five activities. Two, repeated, will gear you faster than five played once each.

The one thing beginners get wrong about gear

Do not fall in love with a weapon because it is purple. Destiny's gear system is about perks, not rarity. A well-rolled blue can outperform a badly-rolled exotic in the activity you are actually playing. For your first week, equip whatever has the highest power level and ignore everything else. The real build decisions start once you stop climbing.

When to stop climbing power

Power level rises quickly at first, then slows at soft caps, then requires specific activities to pass. If your power has not moved in two sessions, you are at a cap and need to change activity, not play more of the same one.

If you want the endgame without the six-week ramp

Some of Destiny's best content is gated behind gear checks and fireteam requirements that a new account simply cannot meet yet. If you would rather experience it now, these run with a fixed team and no prerequisites: Grandmaster Nightfall, Pantheon Completion and Flawless Trials of Osiris.

The short version

Day one: one character, finish the intro. Days two and three: unlock subclasses and the seasonal quest. Days four to seven: two activities on repeat. Ignore rarity, chase power, and stop switching classes. That is the whole first week.
