Every new Destiny 2 player hits the same wall: power level climbs quickly for a few days, then stops dead. Nothing you do seems to move it. This is not a bug and it is not bad luck. Destiny has soft caps, and once you understand them, the game stops feeling random.
Power level is the average of your equipped gear plus a bonus from your seasonal artefact. It is not a score of how good you are. It is a gate: enemies above your power hit harder and take less damage, enemies below it do the opposite. That is the entire mechanic.
Gear power rises in three stages. In the first stage, almost any activity drops upgrades. In the second stage, only "powerful" rewards move you. In the third stage, only "pinnacle" rewards do. If you are stuck, you are almost certainly in stage two or three and doing stage-one activities.
- Stuck early? Play anything. Public events, strikes, story missions all work.
- Stuck in the middle? You need powerful rewards: weekly challenges, seasonal milestones, ritual playlists.
- Stuck near the top? You need pinnacle rewards: raids, dungeons, high-end nightfalls, competitive playlists.
The seasonal artefact gives a power bonus that grows as you earn experience, and it applies to everything you do. It is also the only power source that keeps growing after gear caps out. Two players with identical gear can be ten power apart purely because one played more of the season. If you feel permanently behind, the artefact is usually why.
Dismantling gear you are not using, before you have equipped your highest-power items. Power is calculated from what you own across all three characters, but only if the game knows about it. Keep your highest-power item in each slot, even if you hate it, even if it is the wrong element. You never have to use it.
Once you can enter the activities you actually want to play, extra power has diminishing returns. Chasing the last few points costs far more time than it returns. Most players are better off spending that time learning an encounter than farming one more pinnacle drop.
Power gating is the main reason new accounts cannot join endgame groups. If you would rather skip the climb and play the content, these are run for you with no gear requirement: Grandmaster Nightfall Free Carries and Trials of Osiris Loot Shower Bundle.
Power is a gate, not a score. Three caps, three tiers of rewards. If you are stuck, you are doing the wrong activity, not playing too little. And the artefact keeps growing after gear stops, which is why some players always seem a step ahead.
