If you have just hit max level in World of Warcraft and someone in trade chat says "need a +7 DPS, no fail", it can feel like they are speaking another language. This guide explains Mythic+ from zero: what it is, what the numbers mean, and how a new player can actually get started without wasting a week.
A Mythic+ dungeon is the same dungeon you have already seen, run again at a higher difficulty with a timer attached. A keystone (usually just called a "key") is an item in your bag that names one dungeon and one level, for example "+4 Pit of Saron". Whoever holds the key starts the run by putting it in the pedestal at the dungeon entrance.
The key level is the difficulty. +2 is gentle, +10 is where most players settle for weekly rewards, and anything above +12 starts demanding near-perfect play. Every key level adds enemy health, damage, and one extra mechanic that punishes mistakes.
The timer is not there to be cruel. It stops groups from slowly pulling one mob at a time and forces teams to use crowd control, cooldowns, and route planning. If you beat the timer, your key upgrades by one level (or more, if you were very fast). If you miss it by a little, the key stays the same. If you miss it badly, the key downgrades.
Nothing is lost permanently. You can always run someone else's key, and keys come back constantly from weekly rewards.
- They join a key that is too high. A +10 with no experience is not a learning environment, it is a wipe simulator. Start at +2 to +5 and move up when you finish comfortably, not when you finish once.
- They do not know the route. Most of a Mythic+ run is decided before the first pull: which packs to skip, which to combine, where the dangerous caster sits. Watch a short route video for the specific dungeon, not a general guide.
- They ignore their own defensives. A dead damage dealer does zero damage. Learning when to press your personal defensive is worth more than any single item upgrade.
You do not need perfect gear to start. You need enough item level to survive unavoidable damage, and enough damage to matter. A practical rule: if you are dying to mechanics rather than to damage, your gear is fine and your knowledge is not. Mythic+ rewards scale with key level, so the fastest way to gear up is usually to push slightly past your comfort zone in a group you trust.
Week one: run +2 to +4 keys, learn two dungeons properly. Week two: add two more dungeons, start using a route cheat sheet. Week three: attempt +7 to +9 with friends. Week four: you should be comfortably clearing +10 for weekly rewards. That pace is normal and much faster than grinding alone in random groups.
Some players enjoy the climb, others just want the gear and the rating. If you are in the second group, we run Mythic+ dungeons with a fixed team so the route, the pulls, and the timer are already handled: Midnight Mythic+ Keys Season One and Mythic+ Dungeons and Delves Bundle.
A key is a difficulty setting with a timer. Higher key, harder dungeon, better reward. Start low, learn the route, press your defensives, and only move up when a key feels boring rather than terrifying. Everything else is detail you will pick up by running the dungeons.
